Museum of Christ the Saviour Cathedral
This is a symbol of military glory, a
monument in commemoration of the victory of the Russian Army over the Napoleon's
army in the Patriotic War of 1812. The largest orthodox cathedral in Russia was
built on public donations in 1839-1883. In 1931 the Cathedral was destroyed by
Stalin's order, but by April 19, 1998 it had been restored. There is the only
museum in Moscow located within a working cathedral. Amongst the exhibits of the
museum are priceless relics from the destroyed cathedral, fragments of memorial
tablets with the names of the heroes of the War of 1812 and chronicles of
battles, as well as declassified documents testifying the demolition of the
Cathedral. From the observation platform one can view a magnificent panorama of
Moscow from a 40-meter height.
