Every Moscow monastery has a legend of its appearance and Spaso-Andronikov is not an exception. According to the legend, in 1358
metropolitan Alexy on his way from Constantinople by sea was caught by a terrible storm, so he prayed to God, begging to save
his life; instead he promised to build a cathedral in the honour of the Saviour (Spas). Alexy's prayers were heard, and in 1361
he founded a monastery in Moscow with the wooden Cathedral of the Saviour (Spassky Sobor). Andronik, one of St. Sergy Radonezhsky's
favourite students, became its prior.
In 1420 the old wooden cathedral was replaced with a stone one, which stood steadfastly through all these centuries, and today it
is the oldest building in Moscow. The most famous Russian icon-painters Andrey Rublev and Daniil Cherny painted the cathedral, but
unfortunately only a small part of their works escaped destruction.
