Novosibirsk Art Gallery
Nowadays Novosibirsk Art Gallery is one of the most considerable art collections in Siberia.
Established in Russian
Soviet Federative Socialist Republic, 1957. The same year has put a start to
creating a collection. On December 27, 1958 the gallery opened its first
exposition at the following address: Sverdlova str., 37 (on the first floor of a
five storey living house). In 1982 the gallery moved to its present building,
formerly occupied by organs of the communist party of the Soviet Union. A part
of the building is a monumental of architecture has been built in 1926 for the
Siberian Revolution Commitee by an architect A.D.Kriachkov.
Novosibirsk Art Gallery collection of Russian Icons is defined by chronological
frames from XVI until the beginning of XX centuries. There are icons of Moscow,
Stroganov schools, Povolzhye (Volga River area), Ukraine, Ural and Siberia.
The collection consists of icons transfered to the gallery by the mynistery
of culture of Russian Federation, as well as private aquisitions.
There is a special department of "the people's icons". These were
found by expeditions on the territory of Novosibirsk province (Suzun and Kolyvan
districts). The collection has more than 500 icons and allows to follow
iconographic variety and features of the russian icons during a period of four
centuries.
