KHERLEN RIVER (KERULEN GOL)
The Kerulen River is one of the largest rivers in Mongolia, embodying the
majesty and attractiveness of the local landscapes. Its winding path originates
on the slopes of the eastern Khentei range, dispersing life-giving moisture for
more than 1,100 kilometers, crosses endless steppes and semi-deserts, nourishing
the earth and enriching it with fertility. The water expanses of Kerulen are not
only a source of life for numerous ecosystems, but also fit into the history and
culture of the Mongolian people, accompanying them since ancient times.
The river plays an important role in the economic life of the region, being
the main source of fresh water for settlements along its banks and actively
supported by local communities. The pastures adjacent to the river become green
oases where pastoral crops flourish, giving people a livelihood, as in the
century-old past.
Kerulen is not only a natural treasure, but also a historical witness. Here,
along its shores, events took place that influenced the course of the history of
the Mongol Empire. Oral traditions and legends passed down from generation to
generation envelop the river with an aura of antiquity and mysticism.
Nowadays, Kerulen attracts the attention of nature lovers, ecologists and
researchers seeking to preserve its unique ecosystem for future generations.
Each journey along this impressive waterway opens up an amazing world of diverse
flora and fauna, inhabitants of the steppes, and allows you to feel the breath
of the centuries that she found on her way.
Traveling along the shores of Kerulen, you can immerse yourself in the life
of real Mongolia, feel the indescribable spirit and atmosphere of a country
where nature lives in harmony with man.
FACTS AND FIGURES
Kherlen River (also known as Kerülen; Mongolian: Хэрлэн гол) is a 1,254 km river
in Mongolia and China. It is also one of the two longest river in Mongolia,
aside from Orkhon River.
The river originates in the south slopes of the Khentii mountains, near the
Burkhan Khaldun mountain in the Khan Khentii Strictly Protected Area, about 180
kilometres or 112 miles northeast of Ulaanbaatar. This area constitutes the
divide between the Arctic (Tuul River) and Pacific (Kherlen, Onon) basins and is
consequently named “Three River Basins”.
From there the Kherlen flows in a mostly eastern direction through the Khentii
aimag. On its further way it crosses the eastern Mongolian steppe past Ulaan
Ereg and Choibalsan, entering China at 48°3′N 115°36′E and emptying into Hulun
Nuur after another 164 kilometres or 102 miles.
There are many kinds of fishes and birds such as geese, duck, Amur Catfish,
Umber, Taimen, Lenok, Amur
Chub, Mirror Carp, Golden Carp, & Amur Ide. etc.
An honorary monument at Khodoo Aral near the Kherlen River was
dedicated to Genghis Khan. Historians write that the Khan came to power at
Khodoo Aral, an area from which he later emerged to unite the nomadic tribes of
Mongolia. Ogoodei Khan and Munkh Khan were later enthroned at Khodoo Aral.
