SIGHTS OF INTEREST IN ULAANBAATAR
ART GALLERIES IN ULAANBAATAR.
- Mongolian National Modern Gallery.
Mongolian National Modern Art Gallery (MNMAG), sometimes also called the Fine Art Gallery, contains a large and impressive display of modern and uniquely Mongolian paintings and sculptures.
It has a mixture of nomadic life, landscapes and people, ranging from impressionistic to nationalistic. The artworks are always interesting, and are titled in English.
The Soviet romantic paintings depicted in scroll painting style are especially interesting.
The gallery is badly lit and poorly maintained (several birds nest in the main hall!) but it's still well worth a visit. The entrance is in the courtyard of the Palace of Culture, and
the gallery is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The main gallery is on the 3rd floor, there are temporary exhibits on the 2nd floor and a shop on the first floor.
- Mongolian Artists Exhibition Hall. If you want to see more Mongolian art, and maybe buy some, head into the exhibition hall immediately south of the Square and opposite the National
Academic Drama Theatre. This is a private collection of modern, and often dramatic paintings, carvings, tapestries and sculptures. The displays often change and there's a good souvenir shop. The
gallery is open from about 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily except Sunday.
- The Zanabazar Museum of Fine Art - exhibits a great collection of
paintings and sculptures, among which are some rare religious items such as tangkas and Buddhist statues. Modern paintings and other art for sale.
