EKATERINBURG SUBURBS
Church on the Blood
When visiting Yekaterinburg, it is impossible to pass by the
Temple-on-Blood, built on the site of the death of the Royal family. The history
of this memorial church is closely connected with the history of Russia and its
tragic events.
In 1990, the Yekaterinburg City Executive Committee decided to install a
"commemorative symbol" at the site of the execution of the Royal family. In
October of the same year, Archbishop Melchizedek of Sverdlovsk and Verkhotursky
consecrated the Royal Cross, which became the first symbol of memory at this
place.
The idea of creating a temple arose a few years later, and on December 28,
1993, a blessing was received for its construction. Construction began in 1994
with the erection of a chapel canopy over the Royal Cross.
In 2000, after the glorification of the Royal Family in the face of the
passion-bearers, Archbishop Vikenty of Yekaterinburg and Verkhotursky performed
a memorial service for the Royal family and a prayer service for the beginning
of the construction of the temple. In the same year, the first ever visit of
Patriarch Alexy II of Moscow and All Russia to Yekaterinburg took place, during
which he laid a commemorative capsule in the foundation of the future temple.
The construction of the temple was completed in 2003. The majestic five-domed
cathedral, built in the Russian-Byzantine style, has become not only a place of
memory, but also an architectural decoration of Yekaterinburg. The upper temple
was consecrated in honor of All the saints who shone in the Russian land, and
the lower temple, consecrated in 2010 by Patriarch Kirill, is dedicated to the
holy Royal Passion-bearers. The iconostasis of the temple, made of porcelain at
the Sysert Porcelain Factory, is decorated with icons painted by the sisters of
the Novo-Tikhvin Convent.
The Church on Blood has become not just a place of remembrance, but also the
center of the spiritual life of Yekaterinburg. In 2002, the construction of the
spiritual and educational center "Patriarchal Compound" began, which together
with the temple formed a single architectural ensemble "Holy Quarter". In 2010,
the center was consecrated and inaugurated during the visit of Patriarch Kirill
to Yekaterinburg. In 2015, the Patriarchal Compound was renamed the Tsarsky
Spiritual and Educational Center, and the part of Tolmachev Street on which the
complex is located was named Tsarskaya.
The Tsarsky Spiritual and Educational Center includes the Church of St.
Nicholas the Wonderworker of Myra, the Sovereign Library named after Emperor
Nicholas II, the Museum of the Holy Royal Family, exhibition halls and a
conference hall. It is a place where the memory of tragic events of the past is
kept, but also a place where people can find spiritual solace and get acquainted
with the history and culture of Russia.
