Lomonosov (Oranienbaum). Tour to Saint Petersburg, Lomonosov (Oranienbaum). Suburbs of the Saint Petersburg.
TRIP TO ST. PETERSBURG
SUBURBS OF THE ST.PETERSBURG
ORANIENBAUM
The parks and palaces of the town of Lomonosov (Oranienbaum) are 40 km away from St. Petersburg, on the southern shore of the Gulf of Finland,
opposite the fortress of Kronstadt. Architects D. Fontana and G.Schudel designed the Great Palace, the first in the town, for A. Menshikov,
the friend and assistant of Peter the Great.
In 1743, Oranienbaum became the summer residence of the emperor-to-be, Peter the 3rd. Architect A. Rinaldi designed for him the Peterstadt
fortress with a small palace.
Later, A. Rinaldi designed the Chinese Palace and the Coasting Hill Pavilions upon the order of Catherine the 2nd. All the buildings are a
combination of the elegant rococo style and the upcoming classicism. Oranienbaum is famous for its 19th century landscape parks. At the
moment you can visit the following museums:
- the Chinese palace
- the Palace of Peter the 3rd
- the Coasting Hill pavilion
- the Japanese Pavilion of Menshikov’s Great Palace
- exhibition halls in the Cavaliers’ Wing and the Chinese Kitchen Pavilion
How to get there: suburban trains from Baltiysky railway station, get off at Oranienbaum (40 km from St. Petersburg, which should take approximately an hour by train), or take route taxi 300 or 348.
