Russian Far East Federal Marine Reserve
Travel company Legend tour takes you to Russian Far Eastern Federal Marine Reserve, the
only marine reserve in the country. Unique in its beauty and bio-diversity, the
reserve occupies nearly 65,000 hectares, or about 10% of Peter the Great Bay,
which links Vladivostok area waters to the Sea of Japan.
The reserve's 11 islands are rich in aesthetic, scientific, and historical
value. The wind-carved cliffs, sandy beaches, subtropical forests and inland
waterways are home to more than 3,300 species of flora and fauna. Of particular
interest are the Larga seal rookeries and marine bird colonies. The wind, waves
and rain have crafted striking geological sculptures that lend additional charm
to the reserve's picturesque blend of island and coastline.
The reserve's waters abound in highly varied marine life and feature
underwater rocks, banks and reefs covered with an almost continuous «living
carpet.» Among the sea life you can see and photograph are the giant octopus,
Kamchatka king crab, sea urchins and cucumbers, starfish and others.
The sea reserve consists of four sites: three are located in Hasanskom area
of Primorski Krai, the fourth on island Popova, in May Day area of
Vladivostok. Behind reserve sites of a continental shore, island and adjoining
to them water area that makes about 10 % of the area of Peter the Great bay are
fixed.
