ABOUT BURYATIA


The Republic of Buryatia is a subject of the Russian Federation and is part of the Siberian Federal District. The city of Ulan-Ude is the administrative, economic and cultural center of the republic. The distance by rail from Ulan-Ude to Moscow is 5519 km, and to the Pacific Ocean - 3500 km. The Republic of Buryatia was founded in 1923.
 

In the south it borders with Mongolia (the length of the state border is 1213.6 km), in the south-west - with the Republic of Tyva, in the west, north-west and north - with the Irkutsk Oblast, in the east and south-east - with the Transbaikal Territory.
 

The area of Buryatia is 351.3 thousand km2 (2023). The population of the republic is 974.6 thousand people (January 1, 2023; 55th place among the subjects of the Russian Federation; share in the population of Russia - 0.67 %, FEFD - 12.3 %).
 

According to the 2020 census, the majority of the population of the Republic of Buryatia are Russians - 64% (share of those who indicated their nationality). Buryats are the second largest group and account for 32.5% of the Republic's residents. There are also Soyots (0.5%), Tatars (0.4%), Evenks (0.3%), Ukrainians (0.2%) and others.
 

The main natural attraction of the Republic of Buryatia is the picturesque Lake Baikal (on the World Heritage List) with its fringing mountain ranges of Baikal folding: Khamar-Daban, Ulan-Burgasy, Barguzinsky, Ikatsky, Yuzhno-Muysky and others.
